Virtual Speaker Series: Whales of the Southern Ocean with Toby Stephenson

Toby is a mariner, educator, and naturalist. Early in his career, he worked as a carpenter and cabinetmaker before completing an apprenticeship on the coast of Maine, where he learned to build and sail small wooden boats. This was a transformative period for him. Immersing himself in the craft of boatbuilding within the community of a small Maine town, he learned the value of serving others. While there, a friend suggested he “consider teaching,” and Toby took the advice to heart. He joined the Chewonki Foundation as an educator and guide, leading hiking and kayaking expeditions throughout the western mountains and coastal islands of Maine.
After graduating from College in 1998 with teaching credentials in secondary science and a focus on marine mammal science and anatomy, Toby taught high school biology, often working with at-risk youth. However, he soon realized his true passion was not in a classroom, but on the water. After several years working as an endangered species observer for NOAA and as a naturalist on whale-watching boats, Toby obtained his USCG Master License and began running whale-watching excursions out of Bar Harbor.
In 2011, Toby was hired as captain at College of the Atlantic, where he now serves as the Director of Marine Operations, teaching navigation, safety, and seamanship skills. During the winter months, he guides in South America and Antarctica, lecturing on marine mammals and the history of navigation. When not on the water, he spends his time with his wife and children gardening, hiking, antiquing, and enjoying this beloved Maine.
Each month, experts and individuals linked to The Carpenter’s Boat Shop will share insights on a range of topics, providing you with the chance to expand your knowledge and explore new ideas. This series fosters meaningful connections within our community and beyond.
