Boat Instructor (new construction)

The Carpenter’s Boat Shop offers a nine-month residential tuition-free apprenticeship to approximately 10 apprentices annually. The daily focus is the craft of wooden boat building, our  signature vessel is the Monhegan Skiff. We also host a catalog of class offerings annually, ranging from skiff building to furniture making. We host community events, restore wooden  boats, and have a robust vessel donation program. All of which help support our mission and apprenticeship. The Boat Shop is an incredibly special organization that has the privilege to make an impact in many lives. 

 Requirements:

  • Valid State of Maine driver’s license.
  • Clean driving record with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Physical ability to meet responsibilities.
  • Ability to analyze problems, make recommendations for solutions and to put recommendations into action.

Instructors are expected to foster a community environment that teaches respect, responsibility, service to others and personal growth. The instructors are supported by the Program Manager and Executive Director.

 Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Program Manager (PM) and fellow instructors to design the curriculum and programs for our 9-month apprenticeship. This includes an onboarding curriculum, a weekly and monthly curriculum guide for learning and skill development.
  • Develop and teach a skill-building progression of lessons related to basic woodworking skills up to fine craftsmanship finishing skills, and boat building skills.
  • Create a curriculum to support Monhegan Skiff builds and other builds.
  • Help oversee the daily work of apprentices, set goals and timelines for projects and learning.
  • Mentor and manage up to 10 apprentices.
  • Meet new build goals provided by Program Manager.
  • Mentor and provide feedback to apprentices.
  • Assist in facilitating community experiences for apprentices.
  • Assist with maritime-related instruction, including teaching of knots, classroom seamanship, OTW sailing skills.
  • Participate in the apprentice interview process by assisting with interviews and on-campus visits.
  • Communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with Program Manager, Executive Director, and fellow instructors.
  • When appropriate, participate in volunteer opportunities, field trips, and outreach for apprentices.
  • Teach woodworking, finishing/craftsmanship, boat building, shop safety and restoration skills.
  • Anticipate, order and/or procure equipment and supplies as needed, within budget or with approval of ED.
  • Maintain, sharpen, and repair tools and machinery.
  • Participate in on-campus projects and facilities projects led by Fleet and Facilities Manager.
  • Teach open enrollment and custom classes in woodworking throughout the calendar year, up to 30 open enrollment or custom course days.
  • Assist and work with Fleet and Facilities Manager for any campus needs.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Wooden boat-building skills
  • Sailing experience, preferably in a coastal or backcountry environment
  • Leadership skills; ability to lead a group to complete a task
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong personal motivation and initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain positive working relationships with colleagues in a dynamic work environment, including ability to give and receive timely feedback
  • Very strong and effective communicator, both written and oral
  • Capable of using Google Workplace
  • Ability to problem solve, innovate, prioritize and manage multiple tasks successfully
  • Willingness to work occasional weekends or evenings in order to support specific, pre-planned apprenticeship program elements and/or Carpenter’s Boat Shop events, and custom or open enrollment class offerings

Terms of Employment: Full time. Exempt Employee.
Start Date: January 2025

Compensation Package:

  • Salary Range: $35,000 to $43,000 (Based on experience).
  • Room and board: All housing expenses (including utilities) are provided for by the Boat Shop. All meals are provided during scheduled programs. A food stipend will be provided when the apprenticeship program is not in session.
  • Health Insurance: 100% provided. Dental and Vision is an additional cost and can be purchased through our plan. A spouse or partner can join a plan at the expense of the employee. Health insurance begins on the first day of employment.
  • Pension Plan: Pension Plan begins after one full year of employment. 6% Employer Contribution.
  • Vacation: You will have 20 paid time off days (PTO). As well as all Federal Holidays celebrated by the Boat Shop (16).
  • Continuing Education: You will be provided with reasonable opportunities for continuing education and professional development. All such opportunities are subject to approval by the Executive Director.
