Celestial Navigation is both an Art and a Science. It has been used for centuries to guide mariners across oceans.Have you ever wondered how sailors are able to accurately navigate across oceans using celestial bodies? Have you used a sextant or wondered what information this navigational tool provides to locate our vessel on the planet? Have you heard that there
is a lot of math involved in the practice of Celestial Navigation? Captain Rick Miller will answer these questions and more. The discussion will simplify the theory and process for all to understand! Celestial Navigation still works, and it is rewarding to sail the high seas using celestial bodies to track our progress and find our way around the globe!

Rick is a recently retired Professor or Marine Transportation at Maine Maritime Academy. He instructed a variety of classes, including celestial navigation, for students preparing for a career at sea as navigational officers. He continues to sail open ocean passages with Sea Education Association (SEA).
