SUMMARY:Artist in Residence: Britt Malec Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Come join us on October 2nd from 5:30 to 7:00 in the Chapel for an art show with Artist in Residence\, Britt Malec. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. This is a free event and open to all. \n\nBritt Malec’s work primarily consists of  mobile making\, community song leading\, and painting\, though she has a regular writing and drawing practice. She recently has been exploring the Polish Folk Art of pajaki\, mobiles made of paper and rye straw. She has learned from historical texts and images\, directly from Polish experts who preserve this craft\, and by engaging with her own experimentation with her own materials and technique. She feels that an important park of folk art is preserving and upholding traditions\, but also finding a way to carry culture forward that is relevant\, participatory\, and alive. She is deeply committed to forging right relationships to land\, familial history\, and community. She feels that her work shines brightest when she is interacting with others\, be it teaching a class on mobile making or botanical drawing\, leading a singing circle\, or working her day job in perinatal support. She is a birth doula\, peer counselor\, artist\, teacher\, and parent to two school aged children. These combined experiences have given her a unique perspective on the joys and challenges of rural life where she currently lives and works on Anishinaabe land in Grand Marais\, MN.

DESCRIPTION:Come join us on August 21st from 5:30 to 7:30 in the Chapel for an art show with Artist in Residence\, Alexandra Camp. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. This is a free event and open to all. \nAlexandra Camp is a multimedia artist focused on quilting/textile/patchwork/dye. Based in Somerville\, MA near her childhood home\, she is inspired by the influence of people on place\, place on people\, and explores the destruction\, alchemy\, and reciprocity of this relationship through natural plant dyes and textile waste. With no formal art background\, she is guided by the scrappiness of trial and error\, wisdom of traditional crafters\, and generosity of skill-sharing. Through this spirit\, she has participated in Open Studios\, hosted workshops through the KMW School of Painting\, held craft nights for friends seeking inspiration\, and tabled at local DIY markets.

SUMMARY:BIPOC Introduction to Chairmaking: Make a Milking Stool with Charles Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on\, BIPOC centered workshop taught by Charles Thompson. Participants will learn the basics of staked furniture by way of making their own three-legged stool with hand tools. They’ll learn how to make tapered chair legs\, either by hand plane or draw knife. They’ll figure out seat layout\, splay angles\, and discuss what those mean in relation to design and function. Lastly\, they’ll saddle a seat and join them to the legs with a tapered mortise and tenon joint.  \nThe course will run from 9 am to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday. \nPlease bring a lunch. \nStudents aren’t required to bring anything but should feel welcome to bring any tools present on the tool list should they prefer to use their own. \nTool List: \n\nJack plane\nBlock plane\nSpokeshave\nDrawknife \n⅝” chisel\nTravisher\nJapanese pull saw\nSliding Bevel\nElectric drill or Bit Brace\n⅝” Brad point drill bit or if possible a ⅝” center point or jennings bit for brace\nDividers or compass\n12.8 degree tenon cutter (I have one of these\, but if you have one on hand we’ll use it too)\nMallet\n\n\n\n\n\nCharles Thompson makes chairs and carvings in a humble workshop on a hill in western Massachusetts. His work reflects on vernacular forms\, and uses a mixed vocabulary of techniques\, patterns\, and materials that speak to the efficacy of hand work. He typically works straight from the log\, splitting\, bending\, manipulating\, then rejoining wood in a process that leverages personal intention and celebrates common materials. He is the recipient of the 2024 John D Mineck Fellowship. Visit his website here

SUMMARY:Josie Colt & Sam Colt - Shadowings ~ Artist in Residence Show
DESCRIPTION:Step into the work of artists Josie Colt and Sam Colt. Using the setting of the Carpenter’s Boat Shop as inspiration\, this mother daughter duo spent a week at the Carpenter’s Boat Shop following the shadows and collaborating in their differing mediums of puppetry and painting. An immersive installation of darkness and light\, paintings\, and surprises awaits. \nFree Even\, All ages \nSnacks & Drinks Provided \nIn the Chapel at The Carpenter’s Boat Shop \nSam Colt: \nSam Colt is a Vermont based artist working with grassello al fresco. She layers and carves until something catches and opens into its own logic—toward the genius loci of boats\, barns\, ruins\, mountains. Sam begins with a loose idea\, but the real work is following what shows up through gesture\, accident\, and a kind of overactive seeing. Forms surface\, half-found\, half-made\, and she traces them\, repeats them\, and begs them out of hiding.  \nJosie Colt:  \nJosie Colt is a multidisciplinary artist living in Portland\, Maine. Using the analog method of shadow puppetry\, Josie works with an overhead projector creating dream-like sequences. With a background in animation and illustration\, she merges her mediums to explore the unconscious mind\, spirits\, and the human form. Josie also draws live portraits under Portraits As You Pass and facilitates figure drawing with Portland Drawing Group\, offering low barrier creative experiences to the public. It is Josie’s hope that their work may inspire something in the imagination\, and lend comfort in the shared magical weirdness of being alive.

SUMMARY:Virtual Speaker Series: Lobster Fisheries of the World with Dr. Richard Wahle
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Richard Wahle will share thoughts and knowledge on the diversity of lobster fisheries around the world. He will weave in some of the colorful personalities – scientists\, fishermen\, students and policy makers \, he has worked with and learned from over more than four decades of research.  He’ll cover some of the challenges these fisheries share in common in rapidly changing ecosystems and an increasingly global economy. \nRick Wahle is a retired professor of marine sciences at the University of Maine. He served on the faculty from 2009 based at the Darling Marine Center in Walpole\, and in his last five years was also director of the university’s Lobster Institute; he retired in 2023. Prior to UMaine\, he spent 15 years as a senior research scientist at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. Working at the intersection of marine ecology\, oceanography\, and fisheries science\, his research and teaching took him around the world. In Maine\, he established a long-running research program focused on the American lobster. His lab served as the hub for the American Lobster Settlement Index\, a U.S.–Canadian monitoring program that since 1989 has tracked larval settlement as an early predictor of fishery trends. Through the Lobster Institute\, he promoted research and communication to support a sustainable and profitable lobster fishery. \nThursday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 PM EST. The Series is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Virtual Speaker Series: Whales of the Southern Ocean with Toby Stephenson
DESCRIPTION:Whales are more than just magnificent creatures that inhabit the world’s oceans. They are crucial drivers of the marine food web\, indicators of ocean health\, and sources of invaluable medical insights\, thanks to the study of their unique physiology through science and conservation efforts. Since the days of old whaling\, when these majestic animals were regarded solely as commodities for profit\, we’ve come to appreciate them not only for their beauty and complex social structures but also for the remarkable adaptations they’ve developed to survive in the harsh\, cold\, and dark environment of the sea. \nJoin Toby Stephenson\, former Boat Shop Alum and graduate of the College of the Atlantic\, as he shares his experiences studying whales in the Gulf of Maine and following them to the Southern Ocean with National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions\, where he served as a lecturer and guide. \n\n\n\nToby is a mariner\, educator\, and naturalist. Early in his career\, he worked as a carpenter and cabinetmaker before completing an apprenticeship on the coast of Maine\, where he learned to build and sail small wooden boats. This was a transformative period for him. Immersing himself in the craft of boatbuilding within the community of a small Maine town\, he learned the value of serving others. While there\, a friend suggested he “consider teaching\,” and Toby took the advice to heart. He joined the Chewonki Foundation as an educator and guide\, leading hiking and kayaking expeditions throughout the western mountains and coastal islands of Maine. \nEach month\, experts and individuals linked to The Carpenter’s Boat Shop will share insights on a range of topics\, providing you with the chance to expand your knowledge and explore new ideas. This series fosters meaningful connections within our community and beyond. \nOffered virtually on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 PM EST\, the series is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Virtual Speaker Series: Celestial Navigation with Capt. Rick Miller
DESCRIPTION:Celestial Navigation is both an Art and a Science. It has been used for centuries to guide mariners across oceans.Have you ever wondered how sailors are able to accurately navigate across oceans using celestial bodies? Have you used a sextant or wondered what information this navigational tool provides to locate our vessel on the planet? Have you heard that there is a lot of math involved in the practice of Celestial Navigation? Captain Rick Miller will answer these questions and more. The discussion will simplify the theory and process for all to understand! Celestial Navigation still works\, and it is rewarding to sail the high seas using celestial bodies to track our progress and find our way around the globe! \nRick is a recently retired Professor of Marine Transportation at Maine Maritime Academy. He instructed a variety of classes\, including celestial navigation\, for students preparing for a career at sea as navigational officers. He continues to sail open ocean passages with Sea Education Association (SEA). \nOffered virtually on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 PM EST\, the series is free and open to the public. Don’t miss the chance to engage in these inspiring conversations!

SUMMARY:Virtual Speaker Series: The Ship that Held Up Wall Street with Warren Riess
DESCRIPTION:In January 1982\, archaeologists investigating a building site in Manhattan discovered the remains of an early eighteenth-century merchant ship. Not being maritime archaeologists\, they called on Warren Riess of Bristol to co-direct the excavation of the ship. For the next three decades he studied the ship and conducted research in America and Europe to discover as much as possible about it and determine what history could be learned from ship’s remains. \nOn Thursday evening\, January 15th\, Professor Riess will present an illustrated lecture on the discovery\, excavation\, subsequent research\, and the ship’s sailing history and what he learned from its remains. \nOffered virtually on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 PM EST\, the series is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Virtual Speaker Series: Remote Emergency Medicine with Abby Rowe\, M.Ed.\, NRAEMT
DESCRIPTION:From Sea to Summit: Medical Decision-Making in Remote Environments \nHave you ever wondered how you would handle a medical emergency while coastal cruising or at sea? Abby Rowe\, president of Wilderness Medical Associates International and board president at the Carpenter’s Boat Shop\, will introduce a systems-based framework for recognizing and responding to common medical problems in unpredictable\, low-resource coastal and ocean environments. Just as understanding how an engine works helps you troubleshoot when it sputters or stalls\, understanding how the body’s systems respond to illness and injury provides a foundation for sound medical decisions when professional help is out of reach. \nDrawing on the principles of wilderness and rescue medicine\, this presentation will clarify what constitutes an emergency\, when to call for help\, and how to treat emergencies when assistance is hours\, days\, or even weeks away. The session will cover topics such as broken bones\, dislocations\, wound care\, and pain management with an emphasis on the realities of care in remote and austere settings. \nThis talk is for coastal cruisers\, offshore sailors\, and anyone who ventures beyond quick access to medical care—whether on the water\, in the mountains\, or in other remote settings.
