SUMMARY:Virtual Speaker Series: Lobster Fisheries of the World with Dr. Richard Wahle
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Richard Wahle will share thoughts and knowledge on the diversity of lobster fisheries around the world. He will weave in some of the colorful personalities – scientists\, fishermen\, students and policy makers \, he has worked with and learned from over more than four decades of research.  He’ll cover some of the challenges these fisheries share in common in rapidly changing ecosystems and an increasingly global economy. \nRick Wahle is a retired professor of marine sciences at the University of Maine. He served on the faculty from 2009 based at the Darling Marine Center in Walpole\, and in his last five years was also director of the university’s Lobster Institute; he retired in 2023. Prior to UMaine\, he spent 15 years as a senior research scientist at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. Working at the intersection of marine ecology\, oceanography\, and fisheries science\, his research and teaching took him around the world. In Maine\, he established a long-running research program focused on the American lobster. His lab served as the hub for the American Lobster Settlement Index\, a U.S.–Canadian monitoring program that since 1989 has tracked larval settlement as an early predictor of fishery trends. Through the Lobster Institute\, he promoted research and communication to support a sustainable and profitable lobster fishery. \nThursday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 PM EST. The Series is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:BIPOC Introduction to Chairmaking: Make a Milking Stool with Charles Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on\, BIPOC centered workshop taught by Charles Thompson. Participants will learn the basics of staked furniture by way of making their own three-legged stool with hand tools. They’ll learn how to make tapered chair legs\, either by hand plane or draw knife. They’ll figure out seat layout\, splay angles\, and discuss what those mean in relation to design and function. Lastly\, they’ll saddle a seat and join them to the legs with a tapered mortise and tenon joint.  \nPlease bring a lunch. If interested in housing accommodation\, we have two tent platforms and a small cabin available. Please reach out to danielle@carpentersboatshop.org \nStudents aren’t required to bring anything but should feel welcome to bring any tools present on the tool list should they prefer to use their own. \nTool List: \n\nJack plane\nBlock plane\nSpokeshave\nDrawknife \n⅝” chisel\nTravisher\nJapanese pull saw\nSliding Bevel\nElectric drill or Bit Brace\n⅝” Brad point drill bit or if possible a ⅝” center point or jennings bit for brace\nDividers or compass\n12.8 degree tenon cutter (I have one of these\, but if you have one on hand we’ll use it too)\nMallet\n\n\n\n\n\nCharles Thompson makes chairs and carvings in a humble workshop on a hill in western Massachusetts. His work reflects on vernacular forms\, and uses a mixed vocabulary of techniques\, patterns\, and materials that speak to the efficacy of hand work. He typically works straight from the log\, splitting\, bending\, manipulating\, then rejoining wood in a process that leverages personal intention and celebrates common materials. He is the recipient of the 2024 John D Mineck Fellowship. Visit his website here
